Zerovis

As of September 14th, 2006, users from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Thailand will be able to receive funds into their PayPal accounts as well as withdraw them to their local bank accounts. So far, they were only able to use their Paypal accounts for outgoing payments.

The step was already expected for several days, following to a change of certain conditions from Paypal side and previous announcements.

Directory is rather insignificant part of Zerovis, yet it was here from when I took over, so I have chosen to restore it in it’s entirety, including original categories. Just the script changed. And the name, to sub zero directory.
From now on, the strategy changes. It will mainly consist of quality websites supplied by me. Only small part will come from public submissions, and i will maintain rather extremely low approval ratio. Only real websites with real owners behind, will be considered. Perhaps later on, the submission will be made harder or paid for, which will help to sort out the weed from real stuff.

Better submission and approval rules need be written, too. They will be rather strict. Much more strict than months ago, before the database was lost. The resuscitation took time, and I don’t want it to be spoiled by low quality website submissions.

To think over the strategy is very important when it comes to building the directory, when you want to differentiate from thousands of same or similar projects out there. Something I didn’t think of when the original thing started, as I had little experience in the field. Now the strategy is simple, but what is important, THERE IS a strategy, and it will be followed.

Our host went out of business…. It wasn’t that bad, as they probably didn’t charge me for last three months….they were not billing, not sending invoices, so I really can’t complain much… just that they didn’t sent a single notice that they are out of it.
Once the contract with their provider expired, they simply ceased to exist and I lost all files and databases. And oh yeah, there was no backup. This was just a “completely forgotten webhosting account”. Unlike the main account where I have regular backups.
Old story told thousandfold all over the internet. I think I hear the same almost everyday.
To cut it short: backup lessons were learned, reinstall was mightily procrastinated about, but finally zerovis reemerged. Positive side: blogging script was updated, and directory script was changed to a different software.
